A different lifestyle…

Recently my daughter and her husband became what are called “vegans”, I believe.  I admire them their courage and commitment.

I wonder IF my husband and I could ever make that sort of a change.  Lord knows it would probably be better for BOTH of us.  We both have high blood pressure, controlled cholesterol, and I have type two Diabetes.

It would probably take us nearly two weeks to begin the new lifestyle due to the current “stores” we have on hand in the ‘frig, freezer and pantry.  Why  not cold turkey??  Honestly we can’t afford to waste that food.

Comments anyone??  Thanks!

M & Ms….

I need to vent just a bit.  I LOVE M & Ms.  Plain have always been my favorite candy.  When I was a little girl I could go to a downtown “Kresge” store and get quite a bit of candy for 25 cents.  That shows you just how old I am.  :)   If you don’t know, Kresge is the original K Mart Corporation.  Anyway, I love the plain M & Ms but…being diabetic I have to be very careful with sugars.

There are a lot of companies coming out with sugar free candy these days and that’s very nice for diabetics.  You still have to be careful and count the carbs involved, but if you really need the taste of good sugar, more and more it’s starting to be out there.

I sent an e-mail to the parent company, M & M Mars, and left a suggestion that they too come out with a sugar free M & M.  I got an e-mail back from them telling me that they don’t use input from customers for those types of decisions.  I think that’s flat out STUPID!  They could have at least worded it so that they might pay attention instead of just telling me more or less that they don’t give a rip.  Is it just me or is this stupid?

One piece of good news….I was able to for the first time, find a sugar free chocolate Easter bunny this year.  That was a first for me.   Thank you Russell Stover.    I bit the head off, just like a little kid, then put the rest of it in the freezer for the future.  :)

Exercise…

I’m sure I’ve mentioned how much I don’t enjoy exercise.  I enjoy some things, easier things like recreational swimming, walking and bike riding, though I don’t own a bike at this time.  But really get out there and sweat exercise…no I’ve never enjoyed it.

I do it.  I try to do a 40 minute “routine” six days a week.  It includes a warm up, some aerobics, a leg workout, some weight work and a cool down.  Over all it’s about 40-45 minutes.  I say I try to do it six times a week.  This week I’ve done four days so far, so I’m doing pretty well this week.   I guess I’ll just leave it at, I’ll try to do the other two days also as well as the same “try” for next week.

I addition to the workout which I do privately, my husband and I try to walk 2 1/2 miles a day at a local mall.  Weather permitting we’d walk outdoors, but can’t during this snowy, cold time of the year.

One of the things I find interesting about “mall walking” is the different types of people it brings to the mall.  Sometimes I feel as if I’m the only female there that wants to break a sweat at all.  Some of these ladies are wearing a full program of make-up and are usually wearing designer clothes.  I guess I’m just the opposite.  When I work out it’s not pretty.   Different strokes for different folks, I guess.  I guess the really important thing is that we’re at least out there, doing it.

At times I see older senior citizens using a walker and carrying oxygen.  GOOD FOR THEM!  At least they’re trying to better their lives.   I hope I’ll always at least try also.  …Good life…

One Thing a Day — Update…

So far I’ve kept with it.  I won’t say I’ve done hard stuff or even work related things, but I’ve done at least one thing a day that’s made some sort of difference.    Examples…

One day I created a recipe and passed it on to a friend.   I cleaned out three drawers one day.  I had some remaining holiday things that needed ironing and a little mending.  I took care of that. I sorted through a rather large group of old pictures, pitched quite a few and prepared the remaining ones for an album.  Today I did something I’ve not done in about 30 years.  I laid out the fabric for a pattern and cut it out.

These aren’t difficult things, but they’re things that are keeping my mind active and keeping me up off my rear.  …Can’t hurt!!  :)

Taking things for granted…

I suppose all of us from time to time take things for granted.  It’s when something starts to hurt, or we run out of it that you really realize just how much you need it or use it.

I’ve been working on some typical Christmas things, crafts, cooking, cards, decorating, etc.  Over the season I have really come to appreciate my thumbs.  My hands have been in and out of water, craft materials, wrapping paper, ribbon, and other things you get into during the holidays.  I’ve developed a skin crack on my left thumb.  It’s very sore and I’m trying to use it as little as possible.  I’m very left handed and trying to substitute  my right hand/thumb is very awkward for me.  I never realized just how much I use my thumbs before.

They say you never really appreciate anything until it’s gone.  I guess that’s true enough.   Something so small having an effect on the things you do on a daily basis is an eye opening experience.

Finally…

It’s taken a while but I’m finally just about over my cold.  It feels good to feel good again.  I have become a firm  believer in vitamin C and Echinacea.  I think it helps and doubt if it will hurt.

I  finished our Christmas shopping today.  I’ve never been this far ahead.  Nothing is wrapped yet and I still have a craft I’m working on which will take a while, but I’m making progress.

I’m really behind on my decorating this year also.  We’re donating a few things to charity next week and I want to wait for that before adjusting my space.  I don’t want to have to do it twice.

It’s early in the season and things are already starting to get busy.  I look forward to all of it though and will enjoy it as it comes.

I hate colds…

My husband and I have colds.  We started feeling them Monday.  There’s an old saying that “It takes a cold three days to come, stays three days, and takes  three days to go.”  I don’t know if that’s actually the case and I really shouldn’t complain.  This is the first cold I’ve had in about three years.

My mother told me you should never hate.  I could never understand why you shouldn’t hate some things, especially colds.  Your nose runs and gets sore,  you cough, you’re congested, can’t taste, feel sluggish, etc., etc., etc.  What’s there to love!??!  As I’ve grown older I’ve learned that my mother was right about a lot of things, but the jury is still out on this one.  :)

Oh well, on with day number four.

Casserole Central…

It’s late fall and winter doesn’t officially start for another month, but it’s cold, it’s very windy, and it feels like winter to me.  I guess the older I get the colder I get.

This is the time I start looking for casseroles, slow cooker dinners, or anything that has to be fully heated before eating.  The days of cool sandwiches and salads are gone for a while unless we vacation somewhere a lot warmer than here.

The “hot” dinner situation doesn’t bother me and gives me a chance to experiment in the kitchen.   It’s all a part of learning I guess, and having the time to think things through.  My husband usually asks if there’s something he can do to help.  I usually tell him “no” because I’m making it up as I go.

It’s tuna casserole on the menu tonight.  It smells good already and only took about ten minutes to prepare for baking..  We’ll have to see what cold weather dinner I create tomorrow.  :)
